History

In January of 1993, I was a senior in high school. I had the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. with the Close-Up Program. The Close-Up Program helps high school students get an inside look at the way our Federal Government works and helps them gets a better understanding of our government process. For us 8 kids, 7 Seniors and 1 Junior, it was a chance to see our Governor, Bill Clinton, (remember, I am from Arkansas) be inaugurated as President of the United States. It was a once in a life-time opportunity for us kids. I mean really, looking back, my parents were sending me with 7 other kids to Washington D.C. for 8 days with only one chaperone? Not that we did anything bad or even that we would...just looking back it makes me laugh. It was a wonderful trip and I wouldn't change one thing. Here are some pics....

Jordan House, Peyton Daniel, Matthew Blue, Ryan Butterfield, and me.

Margy Smith, Katy Staggs, me and Allison Rector.

As I said, being in Washington D.C. for the Inauguration was a once in a life-time event. I watched today's Inauguration of our 44th President, Barak Obama and all of my memories from President Clinton's swearing in 1993 came back. In 1992, I had voted in the Presidential election. I was 18, I didn't know much (okay, hardly anything) about the candidates or what they stood for....I was just excited to be able to vote! This time, 16 years later, I was older, more informed, and yet still excited to be able to vote! Now it is 2009, we have a new leader in our country and regardless of how you voted or how you feel, he is our new President. We have our freedom to celebrate, every day. And for that, I am thankful to be an American.

OK, I have a question...how did you manage to avoid the early 90's "big hair"? All the girls in those pics had big hair. I had big hair. How did you have the foresight to avoid that?! Lucky you!! I guess you've always been a smart girl! :)

I was just thinking about this yesterday! Specifically, I remembered Allison going and what an experience that must have been -- so glad you got to go, too. My one question -- why Peyton D.???

Lorie...I never had big hair because I have straight as a board hair....I tried, believe me, I wanted to have big hair, but no go!

Sandi...I have not a clue why Peyton got to go with us! It was fun with him there, though...He was so much fun!
